500 signatures put Republican Gov. Phil Scott on Vermont’s August primary ballot, ending months of uncertainty over whether he would seek a sixth term.
Scott said he wants to keep the state from moving backward; if reelected, he would become the longest-serving consecutive governor in Vermont history.
Democrats Aly Richards and Amanda Janoo will compete in August for the chance to face Scott in November after higher-profile Democrats Charity Clark and Mike Pieciak chose reelection bids instead.
Jill Krowinski and Phil Baruth also said they will not seek reelection, guaranteeing new House and Senate leadership next session.
At least three dozen legislative races are now set to feature fresh candidates, adding to turnover in a ballot that also includes a contested Republican primary for Vermont’s lone U.S. House seat.
