Four Democratic-leaning states — Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington — were sued after refusing to issue confidential license plates for vehicles used by federal immigration agents.
The Justice Department says undercover plates are needed to protect ICE agents from harassment and keep operations from being exposed, arguing the states are obstructing federal enforcement and violating the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said the state will not help ICE “operate in secret,” citing arrests of US citizens and lawful residents, while Oregon said its broader pause on federal vehicle registrations is a legal review, not a threat to officers.
The dispute tests state control over motor-vehicle systems against federal immigration powers, and could shape how far states can go in denying assistance to ICE during Trump’s mass deportation drive.
