A jury in Austria retired to deliberate in the trial of Beran A, the 21-year-old who admitted plotting a jihadist attack on Taylor Swift’s August 2024 Vienna concert.
Prosecutors said he had radicalized, sworn allegiance to Islamic State, tried to buy a machine gun and grenade, and sought to build a bomb from an IS video.
Beran A also admitted membership in a terrorist organization but denied other counts, including helping plan attacks in Mecca; co-defendant Arda K denied supporting those plans and was not involved in the Swift plot.
A CIA tip-off led to Beran A’s arrest before the first of 3 sold-out Vienna shows, prompting cancellations that affected nearly 200,000 fans and, Swift later said, averted a "massacre situation."
If convicted on all counts, Beran A and Arda K face up to 20 years in prison.
