Nearly 100 firefighters had contained the Dallas apartment fire by Thursday evening and were using ladders, hand crews and a drone to search the collapsed building for possible victims.
A natural gas explosion triggered the blaze, Dallas Fire-Rescue said, leaving one building in ruins with smoking debris piled on the ground and black smoke rising over Oak Cliff.
Four people were taken to hospital, but officials said their conditions were unknown and the number of possible fatalities had not yet been determined.
The explosion followed earlier gas leak reports and shattered nearby windows, prompting evacuations as residents described a blast strong enough to knock items off walls.
With the cause unconfirmed, was the apartment blast a tragic accident or a sign of deeper negligence?
