Specialized says the new S-Works Crux 5 would have cut Sofia Gomez Villafañe’s 2025 Unbound Gravel time by 9 minutes 58 seconds versus the Crux 4, using a race-time simulation model.
That “Time to Finish” model combines aero drag, frame weight, rolling resistance, surface roughness, weather, course profile and rider power, drawing on telemetry packs used in elite gravel races.
The bike’s headline specs include a claimed 789g FACT 12r frame, 6.9kg complete weight, 55mm tire clearance and 15.2 watts lower drag than the Crux 4 at 45kph.
Specialized positions the Crux 5 as a pure gravel race machine rather than a cyclocross crossover, with geometry tuned for bigger tires and stability and prices running from $4,500 to $14,000.
With top pros questioning aero's impact, is the new Crux a true performance leap or just marketing hype?
As gravel bikes chase aerodynamic gains, are they sacrificing the versatility that defined the sport's spirit?
