Let’s Talk AI, described as the first UK project of its kind, is running a six-month public engagement campaign built from questions gathered from communities across the country.
University of Sheffield researcher Susan Oman said the effort responds to a gap in national policy: public concern about AI has risen 10% in two years, while 91% of people say fairness should come before economic gain.
The campaign places AI discussion in everyday settings such as bus stops and community centres in Sheffield, Plymouth and Morecambe, aiming to reach people outside government, faith and tech circles.
Oman argued to parliament’s all-party group on AI that AI sovereignty is a human and societal issue, and said government investment in sovereign AI, skills and schools still lacks a public-engagement programme.

Overview
The UK public is calling for fair and regulated AI, highlighting a strong desire for human accountability and greater public involvement in AI development. While the government focuses on AI's opportunities, many people remain cautious, with a significant portion seeing AI as a risk and lacking trust in its adoption. This gap between public concern and government priorities underscores the urgent need for initiatives that foster dialogue and ensure AI serves society's best interests. The report shows that including the public in shaping AI infrastructure is essential for building trust and creating responsible, transparent AI systems.
