At 83, Paul McCartney said he keeps writing songs out of love and compulsion, using a New York interview to introduce his new album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane.”
McCartney said he follows no fixed routine, instead writing whenever a guitar or piano is nearby and an idea hits — a process he described as addictive and creatively rewarding.
On “Saturday Night Live,” he performed both older material and “Days We Left Behind,” a song from the new album, after rehearsing for the season finale in Manhattan.
Five days later, McCartney made a surprise appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” singing the Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye” at the Ed Sullivan Theater, site of the band’s 1964 North American debut.
