Sony releases Nate Bargatze’s first feature, “The Breadwinner,” in theaters Friday, with Bargatze starring as a father caring for 3 daughters while his wife pursues a business opportunity.
Bargatze said the film leans on the relatable family material that built his stand-up career, framing the comedy less as an inept-dad story than as a “love letter to moms.”
Mandy Moore, Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Will Forte, Zach Cherry and Martin Herlihy round out the cast in director Eric Appel’s film, which Bargatze said had an unusually supportive set.
To widen turnout, Bargatze said he pushed theaters to offer discounted “Nate Rate” tickets so families, grandparents and kids could see the movie more affordably.
Beyond this release, Bargatze said he wants to keep making comedies in the PG and PG-13 range and said his planned Nashville theme park, Nateland, is advancing toward a site announcement later this year.
With his film facing harsh reviews, is Nate Bargatze's $350 million theme park dream now at risk?
As Bargatze builds a brand empire, can his 'everyman' persona survive becoming a 'Tennessee Walt Disney'?
