Video from Wednesday night showed protesters at Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center throwing wooden pallets, mattresses and other objects at ICE agents as officers pushed crowds back from barricades.
ICE agents responded with batons, pepper spray and pepper balls, while protesters used traffic cones, mattresses, cement blocks and sandbags to reinforce their line and blocked a nearby industrial road.
The unrest grew out of detainees’ allegations of poor food, medical care and limited family contact; DHS denied the claims, saying detainees receive three meals a day, water, bedding, toiletries and phone access.
Tuesday’s confrontation led to 2 arrests after authorities said protesters sprayed officers with an unknown chemical substance, and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin accused New Jersey officials of failing to back federal enforcement.
The dispute widened after Sen. Andy Kim and Gov. Mikie Sherrill visited on Memorial Day, with Kim calling conditions unacceptable and Mullin warning that if state help remains limited, CBP officers may be diverted from airport processing.
