Fremantle and Archery Pictures are developing "Moriarty," a modern crime procedural that recasts Sherlock Holmes' archvillain as a Durham University professor secretly running sophisticated crime in northern England.
The series turns on a rival criminal attack that forces Moriarty to work with police as a consultant, pairing him with Yorkshire detective Imogen Burrows while he hides his own identity.
Chris Cornwell and Oliver Lansley are writing the project, which has no network attached yet; Fremantle will handle worldwide sales and casting has not been announced.
The show extends a Holmes universe built on Arthur Conan Doyle's 4 novels and 56 short stories, joining current TV offshoots including Prime Video's "Young Sherlock" and CBS' "Watson."
