Peter Zoller and Elly Tanaka were elected Fellows of the Royal Society in a 2026 cohort of about 90 scientists, giving Austria-based institutions two new members of one of science’s highest honors.
The society cited their standout work in two fields: Zoller’s 1995 ion-trap quantum-computing blueprint and Tanaka’s research on axolotl-driven tissue and limb regeneration.
Their election raises the number of Royal Society fellows currently working at Austrian institutions from 4 to 6 and lets both scientists use the FRS title.
Zoller is professor emeritus at the University of Innsbruck and co-founded IQOQI, while Tanaka has led IMBA in Vienna since April 2024 after earlier work at the IMP.
Founded in 1660, the Royal Society counts figures such as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking among its fellows.
