Thames Valley Police detained former Prince Andrew on Feb. 19, his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office before releasing him after 11 hours.
The inquiry is tied to Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein, though he has not been criminally charged in the case and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
The arrest deepens a scandal that already cost Andrew his royal titles in October and forced him to vacate Royal Lodge on Feb. 3 after King Charles III ordered him to surrender the lease.
Scrutiny has also spread to Sarah Ferguson: six companies linked to her were shut down after the U.S. Justice Department released more than 3 million Epstein-related records, including an email in which she said she was "desperately" seeking money.
Andrew’s Epstein ties had already led to a 2022 civil settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexually abusing her at 17; the agreement said it was not an admission of liability.
What specific evidence from the Epstein files finally triggered the arrest of a senior royal for misconduct in public office?
As the scandal deepens, could King Charles be forced to abdicate to protect the monarchy's future?
