Nine top Ukrainian drone pilots told Kyiv Post at an AFU fly-off in Truskavets that battlefield lethality comes mainly from tactics, teamwork and electronics knowledge, not flashy flying or a gamer background.
Nineteen teams competed in timed tests including obstacle flying, bomb drops, reconnaissance and drone intercepts, with most entrants drawn from units fighting along the 1,000-km front.
Pilots said successful strikes depend on repeated practice against terrain, weather and Russian jamming, while a basic 3-man crew—pilot, spotter and technician—often determines combat effectiveness.
Several veterans estimated 1,000 or more sorties, one said he had hit more than 500 Russian soldiers, and trainers said it takes about 90 days of combat flying to make a new operator competent.
Across ages 20 to 53, the operators said they sleep fine after missions and remain confident Ukraine can wear down Russian forces through dense drone defenses and attrition.
