70,900 Portland-area residents were unemployed in April, leaving the metro jobless rate unchanged at 5.1% from March but up from 4.4% a year earlier.
1,219,000 nonfarm jobs in the metro area were essentially flat on a seasonally adjusted basis, while the state revised March payrolls down by 3,800 jobs.
Construction added 1,700 jobs and professional and business services gained 700, offset in part by losses of 600 in information and 400 in financial activities.
Oregon’s statewide unemployment rate was 5.2% in April, above the 4.3% national rate, underscoring a softer regional labor market than a year ago.
