May 20’s general audience saw Pope Leo XIV launch a new focus on Vatican II’s liturgy constitution, saying the rites renew believers’ faith, mission and communal life.
Christ is present in proclaimed Scripture, the sacraments, ministers, the gathered community and “most of all” in the Eucharist, Leo said, urging Catholics to be shaped by liturgical symbols and gestures.
Armenian Apostolic Catholicos Aram I of Cilicia sat beside the pope during the audience, and Leo called the visit an important step toward stronger unity and eventual full communion between their churches.
Lebanon and the wider Middle East also figured in the audience, with Leo asking prayers for peace in a region he said is again being torn by violence and war.
The pope framed liturgy as more than ritual reform, saying participation in Christ’s passion, death and resurrection must carry into daily life as ethical action and a “living sacrifice.”
