Doctor Warns Sepsis Can Follow Pneumonia After Kyle Busch Dies at 41

Kyle Busch died May 21 after severe pneumonia progressed to sepsis, prompting Dr. Rory Ratzlaff in West Fargo to outline the condition’s warning signs.
Sepsis usually begins with an infection such as pneumonia or a urinary tract infection, then escalates when the immune system overreacts and releases chemicals that can starve organs of oxygen.
Fever, shortness of breath, a rapid heart rate and confusion are key signs, Ratzlaff said, stressing that sepsis is a cluster of symptoms rather than a single diagnosis.
Healthy people do not commonly become septic, he said, but risks rise with underlying conditions including heart or lung disease, diabetes and coronary artery disease.
People who have had an infection and still feel unwell after a few days should seek care from a primary doctor, walk-in clinic or urgent care.
