China's Southern Theater Command said it drove HNLMS De Ruyter from waters near the Xisha Islands on Wednesday using verbal warnings and warning electronic jamming after repeated helicopter launches entered Chinese territorial airspace.
The command said the Dutch frigate's actions violated China's sovereignty and maritime and air security, while a Chinese military expert described the mission as reconnaissance and probing rather than freedom of navigation.
De Ruyter had been in Manila for a 3-day goodwill visit and is part of the Netherlands' 5-month Pacific Archer deployment before joining the 31-nation Rim of the Pacific exercise from June 24 to July 31.
China said publicly detailing countermeasures such as electronic jamming showed restraint but warned that further provocations in the South China Sea could trigger stronger responses.
