Jordan Tourigny, a 21-year-old Chicoutimi defenseman, was suspended for the rest of the Memorial Cup after officials reviewed an incident in which he stomped on Christian Humphreys' foot multiple times with his skate.
The play occurred behind the net during Chicoutimi's game against Kitchener, where Tourigny and Humphreys were battling for the puck before a major penalty was upgraded to a match penalty.
Humphreys — a 2024 Colorado Avalanche draft pick — left the game after the incident, but Tourigny said he was later told the Rangers forward was not injured and could return for next Sunday's final.
Tourigny apologized in a statement, saying he intended to hit the blade of Humphreys' stick rather than his boot or ankle, while acknowledging that using his skate in that way was prohibited.
The ban removes Tourigny from the remainder of the four-team CHL championship tournament, which brings together the title winners from the WHL, OHL and QMJHL plus a host team.
