June 11 is the release date for Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII, a flagship smartphone priced from about 236,000 yen for the SIM-free model.
AI camera assistance is the headline feature: the phone suggests four scene-based shooting styles, then automatically adjusts lens choice, color and other settings.
A new image sensor about four times larger than the previous model is designed to sharpen distant subjects and improve low-light photography.
Sony also added a newly developed speaker unit for deeper, more spacious sound, plus four color options and a gemstone-inspired textured finish.
The starting price is about 31,000 yen higher than the prior model, which Sony attributed to rising semiconductor memory and logistics costs.
