Pope Leo XIV Decries Intensified Russian Attacks in Ukraine as Missiles and Drones Hit Civilians

At his May 27 general audience, Pope Leo XIV said the war in Ukraine had “sharply intensified” in recent days and voiced solidarity with people suffering from the latest Russian attacks.
The pope said recent strikes had hit civilians, and warned that where missiles and drones fall, homes, places of worship and hopes are destroyed along with innocent lives.
He renewed a broader appeal against war, saying it solves no problems, worsens suffering and hatred, and undermines rather than builds security.
Leo also turned to other conflict-hit communities, offering special greetings to Lebanese pilgrims amid new attacks in Lebanon and entrusting war-wounded peoples to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace.
