California Deputies Hunt 41-Year-Old After Samurai Sword Attack Injures Partygoer

Mariposa County deputies are searching for Jonathan Bays, 41, after they say he used a large samurai-style sword in a Saturday attack at Creekside Apartments and then fled.
The victim suffered wounds to the wrist, hand, head and shoulder and was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital; investigators are pursuing an attempted murder case.
Sheriff Jeremy Briese said the violence grew out of a dispute at a party where people inside the apartment were using methamphetamine and other drugs, calling the incident isolated.
Helicopters, K-9 units and outside agencies are tracking Bays, who was last seen on a trail near a jail and is considered armed and dangerous.
Bays is described as a transient from Idaho with a 2025 parole warrant there, and authorities say he also uses the names Mike, Michael and Aaron.
