$50 million in philanthropic commitments will back a new Data Center Innovation Initiative that pairs Elemental Impact with Microsoft, Google, Meta and Amazon to test cleaner technologies at data centers.
Elemental plans to invest $500,000 to $5 million per project in as many as 10 startups through 2027, targeting low-carbon cement, industrial cooling, advanced electrical systems and other solutions.
The partners will help screen companies, run pilots and share results to speed adoption beyond data centers into schools, hospitals and manufacturing sites.
Rising power demand from hyperscaler buildouts has already helped commercialize technologies such as Fervo Energy's geothermal systems, while storage and cooling startups are testing projects with Meta, Google and Amazon.
The push also addresses mounting scrutiny of Big Tech's growing data-center emissions and water use, with Elemental arguing philanthropy can de-risk early pilots and improve community benefits.
