Square Enix released the first trailer for Dragon Quest 12 during the series’ 40th-anniversary update, reintroducing the game as Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams after years of silence.
Yosuke Saito said development was restarted from scratch after a team reshuffle and hurdles on the original Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, pushing the game further out.
Yuji Horii described a story about a young hero troubled by strange dream visions and said the project has moved in a different direction from what was first announced.
Akira Toriyama, who died in 2024, remains credited with the character designs, while Koichi Sugiyama’s music is also part of the project.
The reveal marks the game’s first substantial public update since its 2021 announcement and signals a broader Dragon Quest showcase that also included Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.
