Germany Warns EU Against China Curbs That Could Hit €1 Exports as Bloc Weighs New Tools

Katherina Reiche told Beijing that EU measures on China must not damage European exports, saying thousands of German companies depend on access to the Chinese market.
Friday’s Brussels meeting will test that position as officials debate tougher China policy, including possible new instruments to counter overcapacity in Chinese manufacturing.
Germany’s push for a “balanced approach” puts it at odds with France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Lithuania, which backed a paper urging more proactive action against unfair trade practices.
The warning extends Germany’s broader resistance to hardening EU policy toward China after Berlin and Madrid also opposed an EU ban on Chinese telecom suppliers earlier Wednesday.
