BMW has launched the M3 CS Handschalter, a U.S.- and Canada-only version of the M3 CS with a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, 473 hp and 408 lb-ft.
Scott Stirling, BMW’s 3 Series product planner, said he spent nearly three years pressing Munich to approve the car, arguing buyers would value engagement over extra power or quicker acceleration.
Fewer than 1,000 cars are planned, and the project required fresh engineering work rather than leftover parts, including a different center tunnel and other homologation changes.
BMW positions it as North America’s first true special-model M3 since the E36 Lightweight, with CS-specific hardware such as carbon body parts, titanium exhaust, revised chassis tuning and track-focused tires.
The limited run also serves as a test of U.S. demand for enthusiast-focused manuals in BMW’s biggest M market, potentially strengthening the case for similar niche models later.
With sales declining, will this M3's success truly convince BMW to build more driver-focused cars?
Is this manual M3 a genuine enthusiast victory or a last, profitable gasp for the stick shift?
