Colin Allred won Tuesday’s Democratic runoff for Texas’s newly drawn 33rd District, unseating Rep. Julie Johnson in a Dallas-area contest between two candidates who each represented about one-third of the seat.
The former congressman entered the race after Republicans redrew the map last year, dropping a 2026 Senate bid to pursue a House comeback in a district expected to favor Democrats.
Allred framed the runoff around political corruption, attacking Johnson over stock trading and corporate PAC donations while leveraging stronger name recognition from his earlier House service.
That advantage had already shown in March, when Allred won the primary by double digits and later added endorsements from the two eliminated candidates, while the runoff also became a proxy fight among Texas Democrats.
