Johnny Garcia, a county sheriff’s deputy backed by national Democrats, won Tuesday’s Democratic runoff in Texas’ 35th District, defeating Maureen Galindo after weeks of intraparty backlash.
Galindo’s campaign unraveled after she posted that she would turn a local ICE detention center into a “prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers,” prompting antisemitism accusations and condemnations from Democrats.
More than $900,000 flowed into the race from Lead Left, a shadowy super PAC Democrats said had possible GOP ties and was boosting Galindo while attacking Garcia.
Texas’ 35th is one of five districts Republicans are targeting this fall, and Garcia has already been added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” program.
