Jon Bonck won Tuesday’s Republican runoff in Texas’ 38th Congressional District, defeating Shelly deZevallos to claim the nomination in the Houston-area open-seat race.
The runoff was required after Bonck fell short of an outright primary win in March, when he led the field with 47.7% while deZevallos advanced with 18.6%.
Bonck, a Houston-area mortgage industry manager backed by Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, now faces Democrat Melissa McDonough in November.
Cook Political Report rates the district Solid Republican, putting Bonck on track to succeed Rep. Wesley Hunt, who gave up the House seat to run for the Senate.
