Mark Duplass said Kane Parsons was “100% in control” of A24’s “Backrooms,” directly rejecting online claims that a more experienced producer or mentor actually directed the film.
Two crew members also dismissed the rumor, saying Parsons—still a first-time feature director—showed unusual maturity and preparation on set despite his age and limited film experience.
Parsons has acknowledged close mentorship from Osgood Perkins and James Wan, including working alongside Perkins in Vancouver, but described that support as guidance rather than anyone else calling the shots.
“Backrooms” opens Friday with tracking above $50 million, while an unusually late review embargo—lifting at 3 a.m. PT Wednesday—adds another point of scrutiny around the release.
