2022 marked Mazda’s return to a self-developed six-cylinder after roughly two decades, with the turbocharged Skyactiv-G 3.3 launched for its newer premium SUVs.
The 3.3-liter inline-six was built to give Mazda smoother, more refined performance than four-cylinder rivals as it targets higher-end buyers against brands such as Audi and BMW.
Two versions are offered: a 280-hp base tune and a 340-hp high-output variant, both paired with a mild-hybrid system; the stronger version also requires premium fuel.
The engine is used in the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90, with U.S. pricing starting at $39,300 for a new CX-90 and used 2024 examples averaging under $30,000.
The move reverses Mazda’s long shift toward four-cylinder efficiency, signaling a broader premium-market strategy centered on refinement rather than downsizing alone.
