Tokyo Broadcasting System Television struck a licensing deal with modern pentathlon’s governing body, allowing "Ninja Warrior"-style obstacle designs to be used at UIPM events including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Obstacle racing will replace equestrian show jumping in the five-discipline event, alongside fencing, freestyle swimming, laser pistol shooting and cross-country running.
The IOC approved the move in 2023, and the new agreement turns that rules change into a branded competition format tied to the Japanese show "Sasuke," later exported globally as "Ninja Warrior."
The switch marks a sharp skills reset for pentathletes, who must pivot from horse-based training toward obstacle-course techniques ahead of LA 2028.
