Texas Tech Appeals NCAA Ban on Brendan Sorsby After 35-Day Gambling Treatment

Texas Tech said it will challenge the NCAA's initial ruling that permanently bars quarterback Brendan Sorsby from competition and will bring him back to campus this week.
Last week, Sorsby completed inpatient treatment for gambling addiction and anxiety, and the school said his return will include outpatient care, therapy, device monitoring, betting-site blocks and financial oversight.
The university argued the NCAA should reverse or modify the decision because gambling addiction is a recognized disorder and the association's own reinstatement principles emphasize athlete well-being and harm reduction.
Earlier reports said the NCAA tied the ban to gambling violations that included bets on Indiana football in 2022, and Sorsby has also sued for an injunction to regain 2026 eligibility.
Texas Tech cast the case as part of a wider challenge for college sports, saying NCAA bylaws have not kept pace with legalized betting and rising addiction risks among student-athletes.
