Dennis Lee Olson, 53, was jailed on DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges after a May 17 wrong-way crash on I-75 in Charlotte County killed Lauryn Akey, 21.
Traffic cameras showed Olson’s Ford F-150 allegedly making an improper U-turn into northbound lanes just after 1 a.m. and hitting two oncoming vehicles; authorities said his blood alcohol level was .222.
Akey, a University of South Florida exercise science student with a 4.0 GPA, was driving home from a wedding; the driver of the second vehicle and her 12-year-old and 15-year-old passengers suffered serious injuries.
Court documents said Olson told officers he was returning from a Fort Myers event and having a bad night; he also had a 2019 impaired-driving conviction in Minnesota.
A Charlotte County judge ordered Olson held without bond, prosecutors said more charges are possible, and he is due back in court on June 15.
