Elm City residents were without water for hours Tuesday after Brightspeed accidentally struck a town waterline, with service restored after repairs around 6 p.m.
Town leaders said the hit line shut off water to the entire Wilson County town; Brightspeed said it was looking into the incident and would issue a statement later.
Residents told WRAL they were frustrated by how the outage was communicated, saying some learned only when faucets stopped working or through Facebook.
Tuesday's outage also revived longer-running concerns about Elm City's water system: state regulators flagged the town six times in six months in 2024 for drinking-water violations, and some residents said they still rely on bottled water.
