Ibi Idowu, whose election as Seattle Education Association president was certified May 8, has been on paid leave since December over allegations she abused a third-grader with autism at Rising Star Elementary.
Seattle police records cited by local media said the boy had five bruises on his arm consistent with someone grabbing him by the fingertips; the child has limited verbal skills.
The family’s lawyer also said an outside behavioral therapist reported seeing Idowu throw a marker at the student’s head and described children in the classroom as afraid of her.
The union said it cannot discuss individual cases and that administrative leave is non-disciplinary while the district determines whether evidence supports discipline.
The case has intensified parent anger and scrutiny of leadership in Seattle Public Schools, where Idowu has taught since 2021 as a special education teacher.
