Utah authorities are pushing an Amber Alert into Mexico for 1-year-old Will Richman and 10-month-old Wesley Richman, saying the boys face imminent danger after their father allegedly took them.
Police believe Dane Stephen Richman, 46, may have crossed south after his 2025 Toyota Camry was serviced in Carlsbad, California, on May 18 and surveillance placed him in Southern California.
Court documents say Richman was seriously depressed, under financial stress, selling possessions and abandoning a home headed to foreclosure, suggesting he may have planned the abduction for days or weeks.
The case began after Richman picked up the children in Washington state on May 16 for scheduled visitation and then missed a deposition Friday; he was charged Sunday with 2 counts of custodial interference and a warrant was issued.
Investigators are asking for tips as the search widens beyond Utah, turning a custody-dispute case into a cross-border manhunt.
With international law ineffective in Mexico, what realistic chance do two abducted American infants have for a safe return?
Why does the world's busiest border lack the simple exit controls that could have prevented this abduction?
