Bill Cassidy, fresh off his primary defeat to a Trump-backed challenger, publicly sharpened his split with Donald Trump by criticizing leadership that is “erratic” and “impulsive.”
The Louisiana Republican has already turned that break into votes and policy resistance, providing a pivotal vote to advance a Senate measure curbing Trump’s Iran war powers and rejecting the Justice Department’s nearly $2 billion “anti-weaponization” fund.
Cassidy said the fund lacked legal precedent and should require congressional approval, a dispute that has temporarily slowed the GOP’s effort to finance immigration enforcement for the rest of Trump’s term.
The clash follows Trump’s long-running feud with Cassidy over his 2021 impeachment vote; after celebrating Cassidy’s loss, Trump called him disloyal, while Cassidy said losing his seat was worth voting to uphold the Constitution.
