Paxton Leads Cornyn by 9.3 Points in Texas GOP Runoff After Trump Endorsement

A Quantus Insights poll released Monday put Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton 9.3 points ahead of Sen. John Cornyn as Republican voters head into the Senate primary runoff.
Trump’s endorsement last week reshaped the race, boosting Paxton and rattling Senate Republicans who had invested heavily in protecting Cornyn’s seat.
Cornyn narrowly finished first in the March primary but failed to avoid a runoff, and his campaign has attacked Paxton over impeachment, a securities-fraud indictment and other scandals.
The winner will face Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico in November in what is expected to become one of the country’s costliest Senate contests.
The Texas race has become another test of Trump’s drive to purge GOP critics, after Trump-backed challengers recently knocked off or weakened other Republican targets.
Could this $122 million primary runoff ultimately jeopardize the winner's chances in the general election?
