Longview fire officials said multiple people died and others suffered critical injuries after a hazardous liquid supply tank ruptured at the Nippon Dynawave facility around 7:18 a.m.
Ten people were taken to hospitals — nine employees and one firefighter, who was later released — after burns and chemical exposure tied to the implosion involving white liquor.
Hazmat crews and plant employees were still working to contain the damaged tank and chemical product, while officials said some individuals remained unaccounted for.
Authorities said there is no threat to the surrounding community and no evacuation order, but asked residents to avoid Industrial Way as the response continues.
The Longview site employs about 1,000 people and includes a kraft pulp and paper mill, with the cause of the rupture still undetermined.
