Stonestown Family YMCA Tightens Locker Room Nudity Rules After 2 Years of Complaints

New 2026 locker-room guidelines at San Francisco's Stonestown Family YMCA say nudity must be "discreet, limited, and brief" and is allowed only while actively showering.
The change followed complaints from gym-goers about a transgender woman known as "Sammy," who reportedly exposed male genitalia in the women's locker room and argued with members who objected.
Susan Pete, 59, told the Daily Mail the rules appeared aimed at conduct like standing naked at mirrors and using a hairdryer while unclothed; the outlet said the member has not been seen since the policy took effect.
The dispute had already drawn protests outside two YMCA locations and a petition from dozens of members seeking to move the individual to a designated gender-neutral space.
After complaints target a trans member, how can a gym's new nudity policy avoid being seen as discriminatory?
When balancing trans rights and member privacy, are new conduct rules enough, or do locker rooms themselves need to change?
