Cornyn Warns Paxton Could Jeopardize Texas Senate Seat as Talarico Raises $27 Million

Texas voters headed into Tuesday’s GOP Senate runoff with John Cornyn warning that Ken Paxton’s scandals could hand Democrats a rare statewide opening in a seat crucial to Senate control.
Cornyn said Paxton’s “baggage” would be exploited by Democrat James Talarico, whose $27 million first-quarter haul could draw even more outside money into Texas if Paxton wins.
He argued the risk extends beyond one race, saying a weak GOP nominee at the top of the ballot could hurt state legislative, local and judicial contests in a year without Donald Trump on the ballot.
Paxton, despite a 2023 impeachment and later acquittal by the Texas Senate, has leaned on Trump’s endorsement and cast Cornyn as insufficiently loyal to the president.
