A 17-year-old boy was bitten around 3:15 p.m. Monday about two hours off Galveston Island while trying to pull a shark onto a boat with his father and another person aboard.
His father applied a tourniquet immediately and headed for the Galveston Yacht Basin, but the boat became disabled near the jetties, prompting a U.S. Coast Guard emergency response.
Coast Guard crews applied a second tourniquet to control bleeding, brought the teen back to shore conscious, and he was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment.
Authorities have not said how severe the injuries were, what species of shark was involved, or what caused the boat to become disabled.
