Rachel Stein said her 78-year-old mother, whose Parkinson's had worsened over more than a decade, moved out of the family home at the end of March and has since transitioned to hospice care.
Frequent falls, repeated ER visits and round-the-clock needs had made home care unsustainable, leaving Stein to juggle full-time work, two children and constant safety worries.
The family had first placed her in a $7,000-a-month assisted living facility in 2021, but she disliked its 160-resident scale, poor food and activities she could not use.
A February 2026 visit from Stein's sister helped push the family to find a smaller alternative, where qualified staff now assist with bed transfers and bathroom trips.
Stein said the move has eased strain on the household, allowing more regular visits with her mother while restoring breathing room for her marriage and children.
