CREW Sues to Block Trump’s $1.8 Billion IRS Fund as Congress Weighs Curbs

CREW filed suit Friday to stop the nearly $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” arguing Trump is illegally steering taxpayer money to allies and potentially Jan. 6 rioters he pardoned.
The challenge targets a settlement among the Justice Department, IRS and Trump that created a $1.776 billion fund after he dropped a lawsuit he had valued at more than $10 billion.
Legal experts have questioned whether Trump had leverage to settle at all, saying he appeared to miss the two-year deadline for filing claims over the disclosure of his tax returns.
Capitol Hill pressure is widening: Senate Republicans’ concerns already stalled an immigration package, Senate Finance Democrats want a hearing, and Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Tom Suozzi introduced a bill to weaken the fund.
The CREW case follows a separate lawsuit from police officers who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6, extending a legal and political fight that is likely to keep the settlement under scrutiny.
Who decides who gets paid from the new $1.8 billion government fund, and by what rules?
