Sarah Wakefield, a Manchester City councillor, was selected as the Green Party's candidate for the Makerfield by-election after its first pick, Chris Kennedy, withdrew.
The June 18 poll was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons announced he was standing down, reopening the contest for the seat.
Wakefield said voters should be given a choice in the by-election, as other candidates have already been confirmed for the race.
