Monday evening, Orange County authorities rolled back evacuation orders for tens of thousands near GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove facility, though about 16,000 residents still could not return home.
An overnight operation found a crack in the 7,000-gallon methyl methacrylate tank, relieving pressure and lowering temperature enough to take the worst-case explosion threat “off the table,” officials said.
Fire crews were still cooling and monitoring the tank with drones every 10 minutes, warning that smaller fire, explosion and spill risks remained and evacuation centers would stay open.
