South DuSable Lake Shore Drive at 57th Street was shut around 9 p.m. Monday after roughly 1,000 people gathered near Jackson Park and 57th Street Beach.
Police said some people jumped on cars, threw objects and charged toward officers, prompting a heavy police presence; no arrests were reported, and the crowd had thinned by 10 p.m.
A University of Chicago Police alert issued Friday had warned of a possible Monday night “teen takeover” near 57th Street Beach, while officers also responded to another large crowd at North Avenue Beach.
The gathering followed a similar unauthorized teen crowd on the Near West Side early Sunday that ended with a driver injuring five Chicago police officers; an 18-year-old was charged with attempted murder.
