More than 33% separated the cheapest and priciest identical grocery baskets in the same city, with Consumer Reports saying store choice can sharply change a household’s food bill.
Walmart was the baseline in CR’s comparison, while Costco and BJ’s often came in about 20% cheaper and discount chains Aldi and Lidl also ranked among the lowest-cost options.
Whole Foods—and in some markets Trader Joe’s—ran 25% to nearly 40% above Walmart for similar groceries, with gaps widening further when warehouse clubs and specialty grocers were included.
Consumer Reports said shoppers can trim costs by splitting trips across store types, using loyalty apps and digital coupons, buying some staples in bulk, and planning meals to cut impulse buys and food waste.
