Tafu Letuli, 52, said he is "the luckiest guy on the planet" after a bullet struck and shattered his safety helmet during last week's deadly shooting near the Islamic Center of San Diego.
Police said teen suspects drove by Letuli's truck on Salerno Street in Clairemont and opened fire while he was working as a tree trimmer.
The bullet left blood running down his face, but Letuli was treated at a hospital and released; he said that without the helmet, he "would probably not be alive today."
In his first public statement, Letuli said he feels "fortunate and sad at the same time," questioned why he was targeted, and offered sympathy to the other victims.
