Toronto placed Dylan Cease on the 15-day injured list with a mild left hamstring strain suffered in Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh, sidelining its top offseason addition after 11 starts.
Cease had delivered a 3.05 ERA over 62 innings with a 35.7% strikeout rate, and manager John Schneider said the club hopes the 30-year-old’s first true IL stint will be brief.
Tanner Andrews, a 30-year-old right-hander, was selected from Triple-A Buffalo to fill the roster spot after opening 2026 with a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings, though he has yet to pitch in the majors.
Toronto’s rotation was already depleted: José Berríos recently underwent Tommy John surgery, Shane Bieber has not pitched because of elbow inflammation, Cody Ponce is out for the season, and Max Scherzer remains sidelined.
The injury deepens pressure on a Blue Jays team that is 25-28, 10.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East but only a half-game out in a crowded wild-card race.
